On the morning of September 8, the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GSCAAS) held its Freshmen Welcome Ceremony in Beijing. Present in the activity were academician Li Jiayang, Vice Minister of Agriculture and President of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Mr. Tang Huajun, Deputy Secretary and Vice President of CAAS, Mr. Lei Maoliang, Vice President of CAAS, Mr. Li Jinxiang, Vice President of CAAS, Mr. Wang Hanzhong, Vice President of CAAS, Mr. Wei Qi, Member of the Leading Party Group of CAAS and Director of the Department of Personnel of CAAS. Other attendees included department heads of CAAS, director generals of CAAS institutes in Beijing, tutor representatives of graduate students, representatives of outstanding teachers, all freshmen, and representatives of enrolled students and overseas students, totaling over 1,000 persons. The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Han Huipeng, Party Secretary and Executive Vice President of GSCAAS. Mr. Liu Daqun, Member of the Leading Party Group of CAAS and President of GSCAAS, delivered a speech.

President Liu Daqun first expressed his sincere congratulations and warm welcome to all freshmen, including 269 doctoral candidates, 710 graduates and 64 overseas students from 21 countries. With the Teachers’ Day approaching, he also conveyed cordial greetings and lofty respect to all teachers and supervisors who were devoted to teaching and research.
President Liu asked the students to shoulder the responsibility of making our country stronger by improving agriculture, keep in mind GSCAAS’s motto of “keeping integrity, seeking truth, studying extensively and practicing earnestly” and put it into practice. He also communicated three hopes. First, he hoped the students could be “down to earth while holding high aspirations”, which meant they should integrate their personal goals closely with our country’s agricultural scientific and technological development, showing the indomitable spirit of CAAS. Second, he hoped the students could “blaze new trails in pioneering spirits and scale new heights”, which meant they should pursue their goals persistently and be innovative to make scientific and technological breakthroughs continuously. Third, he hoped the students could “make progress constantly while passing down CAAS’s distinct features”, which meant they should look for the truth and be practical, be courageous to assume responsibilities and be able to surpass themselves and the predecessors incessantly in scientific research while keeping CAAS’s distinctive characters.

At the ceremony, researcher Jing Ruilian, doctoral supervisor from the Institute of Crop Sciences of CAAS, Ph.D. candidate Wang Hui and graduate Dai Chao made passionate speeches, representing supervisors, freshmen and enrolled students respectively.

GSCAAS also gave commendation to winners of excellent doctoral and master’s theses award and their supervisors, distinguished and excellent teachers, freshmen with excellent performance in their entrance examination, outstanding recommended test-free students, students with excellent performance in their mid-term evaluation, students with excellent course scores, outstanding student leaders, students active in social activities and advanced classes.
